A career in witchcraft history

Dr Jonathan Durrant is an award-winning historian of witchcraft. He is the author of books and articles on witchcraft including Witchcraft, Gender and Society in Early Modern Germany (2007) and the second-edition of Historical Dictionary of Witchcraft (2012), co-edited with Michael Bailey. He has also appeared on radio and television, including the Witches episode of Tony Robinson’s Gods and Monsters (2012) – still top-rated on IMDb! You will find Jonathan’s work listed on the Publications page of this website.

At the end of July 2025, after twenty years of service, Jonathan chose to leave the University of South Wales. For most of that time, he was course leader for BA (Hons) History or the Foundation Degree in English and History. He introduced various formats of assessment into the degree programmes, including wikis, digital mapping, and podcasts. He remains a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).

Jonathan is writing Witchcraft in World History for Routledge’s Themes in World History series. His thoughts on witchcraft history will be posted on this website and discussed in Jonathan’s newsletter “A Miscellany of Witchcraft” (launching soon).
